H.R. 5412, the Bureau of Reclamation Surface Water Storage Streamlining Act, would aim to streamline the Bureau of Reclamation’s permitting processes to help expedite new or expanded dams and reservoir projects. Specifically, the bill would accelerate environmental planning and study procedures for surface water storage projects. According to sponsor Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA), the bill is similar to the process applied to the Corps of Engineers in the recently enacted Water Resources Development Act, by setting the same standards and expectations for the Bureau of Reclamation to become more transparent and accountable in how it operates.  The Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water and Power held a legislative hearing on the bill on September 10, 2014.
